Actually, phone/text does little for me. People can tell you anything. A coffee date IS my preferred screening. Hygiene, affect, tone of voice, facial expression, handshake, and even pheromone smell if I get close enough, are qualities I want to vet first before I invest further. Plus I want to see how your treat service personnel. A condescending, bad tipper is a deal breaker.
