I agree; it’s already game over; we’re just waiting for the final score. People don’t realize that oil is what gives us pharmaceuticals, steel and fertilizer. While a lot can be electrified, these three just can’t be made without fossil fuels. And without drugs, fertilizer and steel, we lose modern society quickly and painfully. (And we haven’t even discussed the forthcoming devastating loss of fresh water or phosphorus yet.)
Meanwhile, the world is on the way to doubling its energy consumption rapidly with the roll out of AI. The grid is groaning with ChatGPT searches, and we’ve only just started. And the largest consumer of all non renewable resources (the U.S.) can’t even acknowledge it (or climate change generally) is a problem.
If you need to quit using AI, buy a bike, or go vegan to feel ok about your life, go for it. But all of this is just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.
